The Last Supper Through the Ages

Da Vinci's painting of the Last Supper

Has anyone seen the article on how artists' depictions of the Last Supper have changed through the ages?

This Reuters report explains how portion sizes have grown over the past 1,000 years based on a study of 52 depictions of the biblical Last Supper.

Apparently, both plate sizes and portion sizes have risen:
The study found that, over the past 1,000 years, the size of the main meal has progressively grown 69 percent; plate size has increased 66 percent and bread size by about 23 percent.
Food for thought...

  1. And the last one I saw, they were all crowded around a booth at Chili's splitting a bunch of appetizers...

  4. This is really fascinating. I have heard how the portion sizes have changed since the 50's and such, but never in a million years would I have figured them to have changed the actual food sizes on a piece of ART! 0.0 wow. I have always wondered, if the children's portions they now serve are the "old" average serving size...then what was the child's portion like. Are we starting out feeding our kids what adults used to consume on average 60 years ago, and puzzled by the onset of childhood obesity? Very, very interesting topic...good post!
